2011-08-14 Day N+1

* add a low-tech configurable input system (just modify the config.lua) XDDDDD
* combine the 2 attack buttons. Hold/press rapidly to shoot (slow/fast)

2011-08-08 Demo

posted Aug 8, 2011, 10:24 PM by Eric Choy   [ updated Aug 8, 2011, 11:37 PM ]

Today we showed off our games at lunch. I'm glad that I spent my last 2 hours last night creating a 2nd player instead of a score system or going to bed. Thanks to Brian's DIY arcade controllers people enjoyed the multiplayer experience :D

Lesson Learned

* Be careful when picking a screen resolution of your game. Our screen projector has a max resolution of 1024x768. That's something I noticed from our round 1's demo. This time I did add a mechanism to toggle the fullscreen mode. However, the aspect ratio of your game can be a problem (4:3 v.s. 16:9).

* Cut-scene not noticeable on the projected screen. Like regular cut-scenes, I added 2 black areas to cover part of the top and bottom of the game. People failed to notice that and they started pressing buttons (thanks goodness I disabled user-input during cut-scene). Perhaps no one was expecting any cut-scene at all (or people just wanna skip them XDDD).
P.S. one can skip the cut-scene by pressing Start but no one noticed that :P

Things To Be Improved

* A score system would be nice.
P1 killed X dinos
P2 killed Y dinos
N dinos were harmed in the making of this game XDDDD

* Instruction
I keep forgetting to add in-game instruction to tell player the controls. Ty did a good job on that. The most asked question during the demo: "So what are the keys?"

* Customizable input/gamepad configuration

2011-08-07 Day 9

posted Aug 8, 2011, 10:11 PM by Eric Choy

I finished the game!

* More artwork and animations (rockman style teleport FTW!)
* Improved the BOSS AI. It's not too easy or difficult, hopefully :P
* Added more sound effect
* Added an "ending" animation
* Added a 2nd player within 1.5 hours (mostly testing)! It's not 100% complete, but it'll be fun to play co-op tomorrow. I'm looking forward to it :D

2011-08-06 Day 8

posted Aug 8, 2011, 10:09 PM by Eric Choy

Today is a mixture of good/bad.

Good part
I finally made up my mind today (Yeah, I know, FINALLY). Based on the remaining time, I did make some tradeoff, e.g. a simpler BOSS fight, which make my life a lot easier XDDDD

More artwork stuff as always, smoother cutscene transition, and a little bit of code refactoring

Bad part
Apparently setFont() will happily accept uninitialized var as font (thx typo!), but doing so will make your game laggy...I'm glad to discover that before blaming my low-end laptop

I have been testing my game all day(and week) long and I'm literally getting sick of the BGM....it was bad enough that I have to change it.....Orz

2011-08-05 Day 7

posted Aug 8, 2011, 10:08 PM by Eric Choy

* Refined fireballz art work. Refined my elf a little bit. Again, even a single pixel can make a huge different.
* Added a little story telling cut-scene, which instantly make the game look 1000% more PRO!!! XDDDDD

Oh man, coding an animation by hand is really time consuming. I really miss the timeline UI in Adobe Flash. Orz

2011-08-04 Day 6

posted Aug 8, 2011, 10:07 PM by Eric Choy

* Added 2 animations for my dinos
* Completed a basic AI, which allow the dino to shoot fireballz
* It's a somewhat playable "game" at the moment, but I still have lot of ideas that I wanna implement :D

2011-08-03 Day 5

posted Aug 8, 2011, 10:05 PM by Eric Choy

Finally colored my dino! Completed the running animation. Go T-Rex! Go my dino hunter!

No, it's not playable yet. Still have lot of stuff to do, e.g. AI, score, health/damage, more animations...etc. Orz

2011-08-02 Day 4

Not much to log. Refined art work. Crafted some arrows (1 wood + 1 stone block) for my elf to play with.

2011-08-01 Day 3

posted Aug 8, 2011, 10:02 PM by Eric Choy

Another art work day! Finished a simple running animation for my elf.

Unsurprisingly, I don't know how to draw dino D:
My dinos turned into some puppy/bird-like creatures! Dunno why I kept adding ears on their heads. XDDDD

After hours of research and practice, I finally got some acceptable drafts.

2011-07-31 Day 2

posted Aug 8, 2011, 9:58 PM by Eric Choy   [ updated Aug 8, 2011, 10:02 PM ]

Unfortunately I still haven't finalize on the story/gameplay yet. I keep changing my mind :P

But I did get started on some basic art work...with COLORS this time! No more greenish gameboy look-n-feel.

After looking at everyone's screenshot, I upgraded my main character from a stick figure to a handsome/hot looking elf (use your imagination). I suppose a barbarian is more appropriate, but elf is way more awesome! :D
